The Common Loon is the state bird of
Michigan. The common loon is also called the great northern loon and
the great northern diver. There are 5 species of loons. The loon got its name
because it is clumsy on land. However, loons have large webbed feet and
are powerful swimmers. The word diver, for the common loon, comes from the
way the common loon plunges into the water to catch fish.
