The flag of the United States of America has several
nicknames, including "Old Glory," "The Stars and Stripes" and "The
Star-Spangled Banner." The US flag has 13 horizontal stripes and 50
five-pointed stars. The stripes alternate in the colors of red and white
and represent the original 13 colonies. The 50 stars represent the
states in the United States, and are set on a blue rectangle called the canton
(or union). The flag has been modified 26 times since 1977.
