Vintage Superman Comic Book

1779...Benedict Arnold is a war hero in the early days of the Revolutionary War. Now he is the subject of a Court Martial. The trial convenes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

1938...The first superhero appears on the cover of a comic book. Superman, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, becomes the first in a long line of superhero characters to go from comic books to both television and the big screen. Superman will become very popular and be heavily marketed. Superman comic books will become collectibles. A pristine copy of one of the comic books printed in that first issue will later sell on eBay for 3.2 million dollars.

1968...Helen Keller dies. Helen Keller, blind and deaf from infancy, overcame her disabilities to become a lecturer and world renown writer.

1980...The world's first 24-hour television network, the Cable News Network (CNN), makes its debut.

President Grover Cleveland

1774...The British Parliament renews the Quartering Act. This act allows British soldiers to stay in private American homes.

1886...President Grover Cleveland becomes the first sitting President to marry in the White House. His wife will give birth to two children before he leaves.

1924...The United States Congress confers citizenship on all native born Indians born within territorial limits of the country.

1800...The second President of the United States, John Adams, moves from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to reside in Washington, D.C.

1956...Rock 'n Roll music is banned in Santa Cruz, California. Santa Cruz is a beach town seventy miles south of San Francisco, California

1965...Major Edward White becomes the first American astronaut to walk in space.

1876...A transcontinental express train leaves New York City. It is bound for San Francisco, California. It makes the journey in 83 hours.

1896...Henry Ford reveals his first automobile. He calls it a Quadricycle. He built built it in the shed behind his home.

1919...Congress passes the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. It gives women the right to vote.

1967...Israel launches a counter attacks against Egypt, Syria and Jordan in the Middle East in the conflict called the Six-Day War. The war will double the size of Israel.

1968...Presidential candidate, Senator Robert Kennedy, is assassinated in Los Angeles, California after winning the presidential primary.

2002...A 14-year old girl, Elizabeth Smart, is kidnapped from her family's home in Salt Lake City, Utah. Nine months later she is found in Sandy, Utah. She is just 18 miles from her home.

1933...The construction on Boulder Dam begins. It will take 3 years to construct what will become, when completed, the tallest dam in the world.

1933...The world's first drive-in movie theater opens in Camden, New Jersey.

1944...A million allied troops land on the beaches of Normandy, France for a massive invasion of Europe called Operation Overlord (D-Day).

1966...Ronald Reagan is elected governor of California. He will go on to be elected President of the United States. He will become a very popular, conservative President. He will serve two terms, and his ability to communicate with the American people will earn him the nickname The Great Communicator.

1982...Five years after the death of Elvis Presley his mansion, Graceland, is opened to the public.

2012...A large dock washes up on the coast of Oregon. The dock was torn away from a Japanese port as a result of the 2011 Japanese earthquake (9. 0) and tsunami.

1874...Apache Indian chief, Cochise, dies on the Chiricahua Reservation in Southeastern Arizona.

1984...The classic comedy Ghostbusters, starring Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd, is released in theaters across the United States.

2001...Tropical storm Allison hits Huston and travels up to New England. It causes billions of dollars to repair the damage.

Handcart Pioneers

1534...The St. Lawrence River is discovered by Jacques Cartier of France.

1973...Secretariat wins the Triple Crown.

1856...Pioneers pulling handcarts begin their trek west to the Salt Lake Valley. The pioneers are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Over the next four years about 3,000 pioneers, unable to pay for a wagon, will make this journey by handcart.

Germany enters Norway

1752...Benjamin Franklin flies his kite during a thunder storm and demonstrates the electrical nature of lightning.

1935...Alcoholic Anonymous is founded by a New York Broker and an Ohio physician. They are both recovering alcoholics.

1940...Italy declares war on France and Great Britain.

1940...Norway surrenders to Germany.
