South Dakota is in the north central part of the United States
and is part of the Midwest. It is also part of the Great Plains region. The
Missouri River travels south down the center of South Dakota. The eastern side
of the river is where most of the people live. The soil is fertile on the east
side and is used for growing crops. West of the river the land is used for
ranching. The Black Hills are located in the southwest part of the state, as is
Mt. Rushmore. Sioux Fall is the largest city in South Dakota. The capital is

Did you know ...
Mt Rushmore is a National Memorial in the Black
Hills of South Dakota. The faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson,
Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln are carved into the granite on the side
of the mountain. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum created the design.
Construction began in 1927 and finished in 1941. It took 14 years to complete.
Ninety percent of the sculpture was carved using dynamite.
