The United States of America
Virginia is in the Southeastern part of
the United States. It is located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian
Mountains. The nickname of Virginia is the Old Dominion, as it was the place
where Jamestown, the first colony in America, was founded. Virginia is also
called the Mother of Presidents, because more United States presidents were
born in Virginia than any other state. Notable features in Virginia are the Blue
Ridge Mountains and Chesapeake Bay. The largest city in Virginia is Virginia
Beach. The capital is Richmond.

Did you know ...
Virginia is home base for the Atlantic Fleet of
the United States Navy. It is in Norfolk. The Atlantic Fleet was established in
1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. The Pacific Fleet was established at the
same time. The purpose of the two fleets was to give protection to the new bases
in the Caribbean that were acquired after the Spanish-American War. Today
the US Navy has around 450 ships, which range from aircraft carriers to
