The Whales of Alaska
Alaska is a state of spectacular scenery. The climate ranges from Pacific rain forest to arctic
tundra. Denali (formerly Mt. McKinley) is the highest mountain in all of North America. Alaska was
purchased from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million dollars. That comes out at two cents per acre. Half of the
people in Alaska live near the city of Anchorage.

Did you know ...
Alaska is bear country. More than
40,000 brown bears (Grizzlies) and 100,000 black bears roam the state.
Most of the brown bears are found near the coast. Polar bears live along the shore in the icy Arctic. Polar
bears also live on sea ice, and have been spotted hundreds of miles from the shore. When the ice starts to melt
they move toward the shore. Denali Park is a popular destination to view the bears of Alaska.
Bears love Alaska.
