Missouri is known as the Show Me State and the Gateway
to the West. It is from the cities in Missouri that most of the early
American settlers began their trek to the West. The state of Missouri borders
eight other states. The largest cities in Missouri are St. Louis and Kansas
City. The capital is Jefferson City. There were 1,000 battles fought in Missouri
during the Civil War. The Gateway Arch, located in St. Louis, is the tallest
man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere.

The Gateway Arch is located in St. Louis,
Missouri. The large arch stands 640 feet high and is clad in stainless steel.
It is both the world’s tallest arch and the tallest man-made monument in the
Western Hemisphere. The cities of St. Joseph and Independence were among
the cities in Missouri where settlers began the long trek to the West.
From president to pioneers, the Gateway Arch was built to honor the people who
contributed to the territorial expansion and development of these United States.
