The United States of America
The state of Washington is located in the Pacific Northwest area
of the United States. Washington is referred to as Washington State to avoid
confusion with the nationís capital. Mt. Rainier is in the Cascade Mountains. It
is 14,411 feet high, and has more glaciers than any other mountain in the lower
48. The Olympic National Park is in the northwest part of the state. The Pacific
Ocean runs along the western border of the state. Washington State has 157 miles
of coastline on the Pacific Ocean. The eastern part of the state is the dry part
of the state and home to Grand Coulee Dam. Seattle is the largest city in
Washington State. Over half the people in Washington State live in the greater
Seattle Metropolitan area. Olympia is the capital.

The Olympic National Park is located on the
Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. The park has Pacific coastline, alpine
areas, and temperate rainforest. The Olympic rain forest is a temperate rain
forest. It is the most carefully preserved rain forest in the world. In
1988 Congress designated 95 percent of the Olympic National Park as Olympic
Wilderness. The Olympic National Park is pristine and has outstanding scenery.
